Mount Dora was the place to be last weekend. The Hialeah
High School Class of 1960 had another successful Same Time Next
Year event. We had some new classmates join us this year. The
hospitality room was buzzing with opened yearbooks from 1958,
1959, and 1960. We need those to jog our memories. Sure would
like to get my hands on a 1957 yearbook.

Mount
Dora is a lovely little town. Lots of shops available to browse
and purchase crafts, antiques, and more. Some of us arrived Thursday
afternoon. We had dinner at the Crazy Gator in Eustis and watched
a lovely sunset. On Friday, those of us who arrived early rode
the train through this quaint area of Florida. It was a rocking
experience and one or two of us were rocked to sleep. We had lunch
at the Frosty
Mug.
The Friday evening gathering was great, as usual. Lots of snacks
were brought in to share. Then, thanks to Bob Shalley and Marty
Aaron, Papa John’s pizza was ordered for the hungry mob.
So many memories were revisited that night and the whole weekend.
Those no longer with us were remembered along with what they meant
to us.
Saturday, as usual, we divided up into the golfers, the shoppers,
and the tourists. There was a golf course across from the hotel
but the golfers chose one an hour away. The shoppers scattered
in all directions. The Krumms had a lovely river cruise until
15 minutes before docking when the lightening started to fly,
the monsoons began, and the boat motor stalled. Then the motor
started and they made it back to safety, a little shaken, a little
soaked, but safe. Many of us had lunch at Cafe Attuare. The owner
was an enthusiastic woman and entertained us as we ate. The chef
came out to make sure all was well. Food in Mount Dora is excellent.
Our dinner on Saturday was at the Pisces
Rising. What a wonderful experience that was. The food was
exceptional, the company was great, and so was the atmosphere.
Due to space limitations, we were seated at a table of eight seated
just outside of the main room. Albert was our server. Our table
voted him best. But those in the larger room didn't get the same
service. Because of the large group their service was a little
slow. But the food was excellent.
Back at the hotel Jack and Linda provided the "Smarter than
a Fifth Grader" game for us to play. Don't know who the winner
was, but it wasn't my team! Linda also provided chocolate martinis.
Yummy!!!
After breakfast on Sunday, we had our usual business meeting.
Phil Giberson updated us on the students who have received scholarships
from the Jeff
Giordano Scholarship Fund. It was proposed and approved for
our group to donate $1,000 to this scholarship. Jeanie Lay Nicklos
suggested the Sarasota area for STNY 2009 and a willingness to
organize the event. There were no other places suggested or offers
to organize, so the consensus was for Sarasota.
We adjourned until next year but will stay in touch via email,
cell phones, and maybe even face to face meetings. If you move
or change your email address and want to continue to hear from
me, please send an update.
Be sure and check the web page that John Burkowski so graciously
created and maintains. There is a directory
there. If your contact information is not correct, please let
us know. If you notice that contact information for another classmate
is not correct, let us know also. Our you may want contact that
person to give us an update.
